Great Wall
Although we had many exciting encounters in China, one of our favorites
was walking on the Great Wall. I’ve always imagined it as just an ordinary wall that
is easily reachable. I was in for a surprise. We drove quite a distance from Beijing into
the countryside to the access point at Mutianyu. Then we set out on foot, climbing up a
steep hill to the cable car that swept us up the mountainside to the Great Wall. Even with
modern technology it is a difficult climb. How did the Chinese people begin such a feat in
500 BC? The construction continued for 2,000 years eventually covering 3,750 miles. The
Great Wall is truly an awe-inspiring sight and a symbol of Chinese fortitude and
ingenuity.
