Dazu # 2
Although there are two principal areas in Dazu to view the stone carvings,
Baodingshan is the most interesting. The 10,000 sculptures and reliefs were planned by
monk Zhao Zhifeng and took artisans only 7 decades to complete. The colorful carvings
depict scenes from Buddhist scriptures. This is a photograph of the Wheel of Life. Look
closely and you will see the founder of the site, Zhao Zhifeng, in the center of the
wheel. Above him is the Pavilion of the Western Paradise; along side are the animals that
represent rebirth.
